Turning Japanese

A Japanese style garden could be the perfect solution for those with busy lifestyles and is certainly ideal if you’re seeking to create a serene retreat in your own backyard. Tony Murrell took the time to uncover more on this unique horticultural technique in this week’s NZ House & Garden programme.

Japanese landscape designer Yashuhiro Fukada came to New Zealand from Tokyo on a working holiday nine years ago and has never looked back. Today he passionately influences New Zealand gardens with his Japanese culture.

While the aim of creating harmony and balance govern the Japanese style of gardening Yushuhiro says “Japanese landscape design has so many rules. I like working here because there is a lot more freedom. I don’t like thinking too much within such structured ideas. I prefer to take what I have learned and add my own feelings and thoughts. It’s all about creating an atmosphere. That’s what’s really important.”
