At the Oasis

A former Aucklander has created a serene retreat in the middle of bustling Marrakesh in Morocco.

In this exotic city, people from all walks of life have bought riads - traditional Moroccan houses or palaces centred on an open courtyard - renovated them and turned them into maisons d'hotes (the French equivalent of a bed and breakfast). Former Aucklander Patrica Lebaud is one of them.

Patricia's story is one of perseverance and determination. Having inspected at least forty possibilities before deciding on her dream home, she then endured the collapse of an entire side of the building. Despite spending weeks removing rubble by hand and donkey, she remained resolute and the result is a simply stunning retreat created against all the odds.
