The Authentic Courtyard |
|
Courtyards in residential architecture date back as far as 3000 BC, but it was the 10th-17th century Islamic courtyards that are recognised as the pinnacle of courtyard design.
Border insets of black pebbles among the Firth concrete pavers create a “rug” effect in this entry courtyard designed by Strass Landscape and Barbara Garrett.
As Tony Murrell showed on the NZ House & Garden programme, courtyards work best when they have a sense of both geometry and symmetry. Follow the video link above to view the story and see the three examples of courtyard styles Tony created.
But courtyards are just the beginning – the advent of the outdoor room has captured the imagination of New Zealanders’ keen to enjoy every moment of good weather. Our outdoor living areas now bring design considerations normally associated with interiors including lighting, artwork and furnishings.
