Your favourite second-hand shop |
|
What's your favourite second-hand shop? Online trading has changed the face of the industry, but there are still some cute, quaint and fascinating stores hanging on in there - with lots of bargains to be had inside.
Says Robyn Gray: We have a really great second hand store here in Havelock North called The Mart. (Hmmmm, my husband has just said we actually do not want anyone to know about how good it is), however, it is a cracker. They specialize in pottery and know all about the history from the 60’s through.
We have picked up some excellent bargains from lamps and shades to a rotary hoe, they have it all. It is one of those I must call in shops each week when you are out getting the best coffee in the world as we have here and from any number of coffee outlets in the Bay or while collecting the mail from the local P.O. Looks kind of junky from the outside but as a regular visitor you get to know that it is well worth the poke around for any number of really great must-haves.
BUT DON’T TELL ANYONE!
Says Hinemoa Mansell: "Ethel Anne Antiques is located on State Highway 3 in Hawera. This shop is large with loads to see and explore and has a wonderful array of beads and antique jewellery. Tthere's just so much to see in it - love it - well worth the visit if you're passing through."
"It has to be the Blue Door in Blenheim," writes Hope Crarer. "Not only is it a fantastic recycling place for the locals but everything in the shop is donated and it is very cheap with lots of amazing bargins and lovely staff."
"Eltham is a quiet and quaint little town between Wanganui and New Plymouth", says Michele, "but it has become a mecca for fabulous second-hand shops bursting with hidden treasures with funky names such as The Bank, 47, Decadence and others, all offering amazing vintage and retro clothes and art deco and antique furnishings. The Wardrobe is one of my most favourite stores for new and quality used clothing imported direct from Australia and the prices are so reasonable even my husband doesn’t complain. Friends have stopped asking me where I got my new jacket or beads, instead they say 'You’ve been to Eltham again haven’t you?' Definitely worth the stop, visit Eltham the next time you are passing through. http://www.elthamvillage.webs.com/"
Jan from Christchurch writes: Lady Barbara on Bealy Ave, just past the Burger King, has been open for less than a year but Sharon has already built a loyal following. They sell good quality pre-loved clothing mainly for woman but with a select range for men and children too. Also beautiful crockery, collectables and now jewellery and shoes. Give yourself plenty of time if you visit, Sharon is such an engaging, enthusiastic and fun person and there are often customers standing around talking like long-lost friends. My first visit was for two hours, and subsequent visits have been just as entertaining and fruitful.
Kirsten Drabble from Wellington writes: my favourite second hand shop is Petone Treasures. It's at 186 Jackson St, Petone, Wellington; (04) 568 5805. It's nestled between fabulous cafes, deli’s and a great assortment of shops. The owner Gloria never disappoints with her choice of wares and has very fair prices. She knows a good piece whether it’s antique or retro and sells everything from kitchen utensils to furniture. Lovely atmosphere and great service.
Jane Burnett writes: Remains To Be Seen, at 444 Anglesea St in Hamilton is one of the nicest vintage shops you will ever visit. Unlike most, it is not cluttered. It’s clean, spacious, well lit and well laid out, with beautiful display shelves and cabinets and lots of room to drool over beautiful old clothes and collectable objects. It is funky, eclectic, interesting and inspiring. Oh, and reasonably priced!
Barb Christian and Christine Ross write: Our store, Vintage Collectables, has been open for nearly five years now. We too believed that traditional antiques were not the only things people wanted. Consequently we've tried to create a shop that evokes memories (Grandma's house, holidays at the bach, Pop's garden shed) with all manner of practical and beautiful old things.
Attached is a recent picture of part of our store; summer is our busy time and believe it or not we are rather empty, relatively speaking!
