When reader Nicki Martin asked for help on dog kennel design ideas, our readers came to the rescue. Here's a selection of their home-grown doggie designs.
Hi Sally,
I love reading your magazine every month, it gives us ideas for inspiration that I collect for when we build our house! In the letters to the editor in your June issue a reader mentions dog kennels. I thought id send some pics of ours.
We have built a heritage barn on our 2 acre section, and I requested the leftover coloursteel from Totalspan to make a matching dog kennel.
My dad has done such a fantastic job! He made drawings to get the angles right, buildt the kennel, and even insulated it for our two chocolate labradors Jaffa and Pebbles. My husband also made them the deck which it sits on, and where they can sun themselves all day.
They instantly loved it and havent been back to their old kennel at all! We have even nick-named it 'Pooch Palace!'
Ive included a photo of our heritage barn, dad making the kennel and Jaffa (right in the photo) and pebbles (left) in front of their kennel. Hope you guys like it too!!

Hi,
we made a kennel out of house renovation left-overs. 150mm wide fence palings for the exterior, Hardiglaze Tile for the inside walls (easy to hose out & keep clean). Fix-all was used to make this all weather-tight, no leaky kennel problems here.We used an aluminium L-shaped trim for external corners & Coloursteel for the roof. Floor was made out of Hardies Sheeting (normally used under tiles), on top of fence post offcuts to keep kennel approx 100mm off the ground.
My brother went one better & put Pink Batts between the internal & external walls. Only trouble is we now have two dogs so may have to design a double kennel or perhaps an updated version of the old one.
Look forward to reading about or seeing other ideas.
Hi Sally, This is a photo of our late "man's best friend" kennel, it remains a monument to his memory, a large black lab. Regards, Marian
Hi Sally,
Saw the ‘reader help please’ on pg 17 of June’s NZ House & Garden. As a building company (and a reader), we recycle left over building materials to construct kennels, playhuts, hutches etc. It keeps our yard person busy, and lessens the waste we have to pay to dispose.
Our kennels are fantastic looking with leftover cedar weatherboards or ply, roofing, kwila decking, carpet, and even insulated with Pink Batts and lined in the ceilings! Built to last and all different sizes.
Love reading your magazine, and always get it at work for us ladies to take our mind off business during lunch and tea times!
Kind regards,
Beth Flowerday

I had huge smiles on my face when I saw Nicki Martin's plea for help when it comes to creative dog kennels! Was not sure if Millie was going to sleep inside or outside but seeing she is a small dog I thought inside for sure! I too cannot wait to see what the readers have come up with because our spoilt pooches are lucky enough to sleep in side during winter on their special homemade beds, made out of washing baskets and old duvets. But in summer we just carry them out into the garage and plonk them down there, so easy and simple and since we started using this system dogs barking at night has stopped. This is our portable dog kennel marvelous idea and the dogs, Custard, Sundae and Princess just love their specially designed kennels. But maybe someone else out there has some extravagant inside dog kennel idea as well - as we have a spare room we have been thinking about turning it into a room for our four dogs. All in all it is wonderful to see your mag going all out for the dogs, since they are stars of your mag for sure.
