Sub-tropical Gardens

The secret to growing a great sub-tropical garden is to know your environment.

The NZ House & Garden television programme recently featured the stunning sub-tropical garden of Aucklander Gil Hanly.  And in the magazine over the years, we have visited many more examples of this fabulous garden style.

Gil Hanly says “The subtropical garden is usually predominantly green - palms, bamboo, ferns – but it also works well with splashes of vibrant colour from such plants as hibiscus, passion flowers, orchids and bromeliad flowers.”

It’s all a matter of personal preference and understanding what will grow best in your soil and climate.  Often seeing other people’s gardens can inspire us with regard to our own patch.

So take a look through our photo gallery at examples from NZ House & Garden magazine – we hope they inspire you to try something new in your own garden.
