My Style: Sarah Couillaults Home with a Heart

Mother of three Sarah Couillault dresses to suit her mood.

Some houses are pretty; some plain. Some are contemporary boxes; others traditional. Sarah Couillault and her family own a handsome house. With its large, beautifully proportioned rooms and wide views, it’s testament to two sophisticated tastes – those of Sarah and her husband Warren (see page 30 of the June 2011 issue). Immaculately finished, full of art and statement furniture, it is stunning. But it is above all a home. “A home is a comfy couch, a full fridge and a cuddle from Mum,” says Sarah.

What’s the best way to relax at home? There always seems to be a job at home that gets in the way of relaxing. But the newspaper and the sun on my back can make five minutes seem like heaven.

Where do you shop for homewares? I love Republic (in Auckland’s Ponsonby). There’s always something new to look at and the displays are fabulous. Cavit & Co (in Parnell) stocks a couple of favourite brands and I love Studio Italia (Newmarket) for furniture. If I’m in Melbourne I always make a trip to Space and H&H.

What do you dress up for? My mood.

Would you leave home without make-up? In gym gear always. In proper clothes never.

Who are your favourite designers? Yvonne Bennetti, Tibi, Lululemon, Barbara Bui, Phoebe Philo.

Do you have time for regular beauty treatments? Only the essentials – hair, nails and wax. I try to fit a six-weekly facial in there somewhere.

What beauty products couldn’t you live without? Kiehl’s Tinted Moisturiser and YSL’s Touche Éclat. (When I say no make-up I have to exclude those two!)
