King Country Rural Retreat

Going Bush

When Bruce Maunsell and Melanie Barton sought inspiration for a new ghome, tramping huts were the first things that sprang to mind. Not so inspiring to some, perhaps, but to a pair of outdoor enthusiasts it made perfect sense. The idea is now enshrined in their house, perched high above the rugged valleys of the King Country near the small town of Te Kuiti in the central North Island.

"We didn't want something that would insulate us from the outdoors," says Bruce. "We wanted to feel like we do when we go tramping or camping - but without the hardship."

True to that concept, the home designed by Mitchell & Stout Architects and built in 2004 is "free of frills - just all the necessary comforts, without extravagance".
