Final touches - how we made the cover |
|

Style editor Tracey Strange used collections of fresh, bright accessories to dress the Murray family’s lovely kitchen for our cover shoot.
Our cover kitchen, in the home of Samantha Murray, is characterised by its mix of pastels and brights, patterns and plains, old and new. Striped tea towel $10.90 from The Homestore, (09) 529 9491; Mason & Cash mixing bowl $109.95 from Milly’s Kitchen, (09) 376 1550; other items Samantha’s own.
Collections are one of the hallmarks of a personality-filled interior. And where better to showcase your collection of teapots than in the kitchen? Samantha’s pale blue sugar bowl and milk jug and green and yellow patterned teapot set the scene; for the cover we added a green teapot $39.95 from Milly’s Kitchen and a lilac teapot $12.95 from The Homestore.
Want to make an immediate change to your kitchen without spending a bucketful of money? As simple and obvious as it sounds, a new tea towel or two can make a big difference. They are cheap, come in every colour imaginable and can be mixed up for a customised look. Striped and sweetheart tea towels $8.90-$12.90 from The Homestore, (09) 529 9491; waffle tea towels $7.95 from Milly’s Kitchen, (09) 376 1550; kettle Samantha’s own.
Samantha takes a strong interest in interiors. She gets pleasure out of mixing textures and patterns in fabrics and in creating little vignettes, such as this one in her kitchen-diner, where multi-coloured roses are set against floral cushions. Russian silver tea glasses (used as vases) Samantha’s own. Cups and saucers from $107 for a set from Ambiance Interiors, (09) 523 2240.
Our country kitchen cover shows the hub of the south Auckland home of Samantha and Haigan Murray, featured on page 84 of the August 2010 issue of NZ House & Garden.
